GMN Hero Maria Silva

GM Nameplate displays devout service and excellence when providing a product, giving each customer a reason to be proud. This takes hard work from many people. One person, who reflects these GMN traits every day in her work is Maria Silva, senior assembler at GMN’s Seattle, WA Division.

“I love my job. Everything at work is a good thing.  I would feel lost anywhere else,” says Maria.

Maria loves her job. Each department within GMN requires hard work, and working in the assembly department is not always easy. Days for Maria can often be stressful and busy, but she never fails to display diligence in her work. After working 31 years at GMN, Maria is able to work on almost every job presented. She is looked up to and called upon frequently by fellow employees. Every day for Maria is something new, but she continues to be of service for GMN.

“Whatever needs to be done, whether it is the most simple or most complex project, Maria is right there ready to take a swing at it,” says Bill McLain, Maria’s manager..

Maria is excited when she gets to work and motivated to complete the jobs at hand, on time. She is appreciative of the opportunity and community GMN provides. Not working directly with customers, but having direct contact with their product, is fulfilling to Maria. Taking part in customers’ happiness and gratitude is a great feeling for all GMN employees.

“Have a good attitude and do the best you can do,” says Maria.

Maria has never lost sight of her humorous side. She exemplifies her positive outlook on life by making her colleagues laugh regularly and bringing enjoyment into each new day. Maria’s reputation has been carried throughout the division where she is known for good quality work and sincerity in her projects.  Maria is always on time and working the best of her ability. Every day she demonstrates experience and commitment in all she does. We are proud to call Maria a GMN hero.

GMN hero Lisa Coletti

Offering a broad array of capabilities, GM Nameplate has grown in size and its capabilities in the last 60 years. Being the individual to help investigate and construct one of our newer markets is something Lisa Coletti, business development manager, can take pride in.

Starting at GMN as a graphic artist, moving into sales, and later working as a marketing manager, Lisa was assigned the task to explore the wine market. Lisa helped develop GMN’s presence in the wine industry. Lisa loves to be challenged, overcome development, and learn within the wine industry. Now as a business development manager specializing in wine labels, she steers the company in the direction of achievement. For many wine customers she is the liaison — preparing, corresponding, and relaying information with customers and the internal staff.

“I like trying new things and I like growth.  Challenges push creativity and move things forward — they create growth.  New challenges keep me engaged,” says Lisa.

Lisa understands customers’ point of view and works with them to find a solution. A recent example of this was when Lisa was approached by a designer requesting a more complex product. She was able to relay information between the winery and designer to create a win-win solution, leaving the customer very pleased and meeting the challenge she faced.

“GMN is a service to so many different industries because we can think beyond the first product,” says Lisa.

GMN has continued to grow in a good direction, accomplish a lot, and prove commitment to each customer. At GMN we hold our customers to a high standard just as Lisa has shown in her work through the wine industry. Lisa’s personality and commitment make her someone everyone enjoys working with – whether it’s through phone calls, email or direct contact with the customer. And that’s why Lisa is a GMN hero.

GMN hero Caren Ang

GM Nameplate is driven by the success of our customers and helping them achieve growth. This requires great leadership to solve problems and challenges as a team. With the contribution from plant operators to management staff, we have been able to accomplish many things in the past 60 years. One individual in particular has stepped into a challenging GMN leadership role — Caren Ang, account manager from the GMN Singapore division.

She started as an office receptionist, moved to sales coordinator, and then was later promoted to her current position as account manager. Caren is grateful for the opportunities GMN has provided her. Ang says she’s had a lot of encouragement to learn new skills and expand her knowledge daily. Every day she improves and grows, while offering better assistance to customers. Not only has GMN had an impact on Caren’s life, she has also impacted the life of GMN. Her daily motivation is the excitement of new business opportunities and is an inspiration for all GMN employees.

“It is the little extra mile you go, to make your customer feel encouraged and comfortable,” says Caren.

Caren processes customer orders and works closely with material and production schedules — never losing her hard working spirit while ensuring customer satisfaction and on-time delivery. Caren carries the role of making certain GMN meets our quality objective, while handling customer feedback. In her experience as a receptionist, production coordinator, operator, occasional event planner, and account manager for both the US and Asia, Caren always gives 110% to her job.

“Caren makes the effort to learn and take on responsibilities that are not hers. She is someone that needs no pushing or much teaching. She multi-tasks a lot and to this day has not lost the spirit of quality work,” says Tina Chen, Singapore managing director.

Caren proudly states, “I feel honored to be part of the pioneer team of GMN’s efforts in Asia.” And GMN is honored to have Caren as a part of our team. Each individual has a distinguished position to contribute to the company. Caren has seen the Singapore division evolve and the entire company of GMN progress through the years. Her helping hand has been evident in the changes and growth of GMN. We are grateful for employees such as Caren. Her hard work, joyful spirit, and love for the company are a few of the many reasons we are proud to call her a GMN hero.

GMN Hero Mark Privett GMN fabrication supervisor

“We have a history that shows not just where we’ve been, but where we are going.”

January 24, 1984 marked a special day — his first day on the job.  Traveling from New York City to Seattle, on a Greyhound bus in 1984, is how Fabrications Supervisor Mark Privett began his career at GM Nameplate. Calling his coworkers family and his department home, Mark has entrusted a deep care and influence in not only the family of GMN, but its customers as well.

Overseeing the fabrications department, Mark recognizes the strengths in his operators to make assignments for best quality of product. Getting his hands dirty and helping pick up jobs, or making sure paperwork and certifications are organized; Mark gives his all and maintains his sense of humor through the challenges. His job fluctuates depending on the day. Some days more stressful with the amount of projects, and others right on schedule. No matter the day, once customers decide what they need and when they need it, Mark is the guy to coordinate production, giving them exactly what they want — the best product.

“I really love the fact that the customer can rely on us. They know we will follow through and be successful meeting their needs. I truly care about what’s going on in my department and what’s going out the door. It’s important to me,” says Mark.

Carrying gratification in the success of GMN, Mark smiles at the fact he’s been here for half of GMN’s history. “The company has earned it,” says Mark, and so has he. Challenges are considered a motivation and an opportunity to grow, according to Mark. Once a customer was in need of a fast replacement for a part they lost. Mark was quickly contacted by the customer in need of a dire replacement. He coordinated and processed another part in very short time, leaving the customer grateful and relieved.

“When offered a challenge, we will rise to the occasion. It helps us grow. We will continue to meet our customers’ needs,” says Mark.

Mark knows customers have helped make GMN what we are today. He continues to provide customers with the best product we can produce, knowing it is exactly what they want. Even though he may not directly work with them, he is dedicated to the customer and holds their requests to a high standard. His reliability and devotion are what makes Mark a GMN hero.

GMN hero Daryl Lim

Working out of the office by day and conference calls by night, is a view into the life of GM Nameplate Singapore Divisions’ Operations Manager, Daryl Lim. His dedication to the success of each GMN customer illustrates his devotion. Daryl’s efforts in Asia aren’t finished when he leaves the office but continue with conference calls between US divisions and customers because of the time difference.

Daryl graduated with a degree in engineering and has been part of the GMN team since July 2001. He has withheld a variety of roles in the past 14 years and has progressed into the responsibility of overseeing the Singapore Division’s daily operations. Daryl is able to gain feedback and a better understanding of needed improvements by walking through the entire plant on a daily basis while inspecting projects and speaking to staff.

Daryl collaborates directly with customers to serve as what he calls a “solution partner.” He finds this the most important aspect of his job. GMN customers are his priority, as he solves challenges, provides solutions, and delights customers by exceeding their expectations — becoming not only partners in business, but also personal friends.

A great memory Daryl has of an exciting moment in Singapore, was when the entire city had a black-out and lost power and light. Daryl quickly rose to the occasion. He got the plant up and running quickly to continue production as fast as possible. There was no delay for Daryl, but rather excitement to fix the problem and meet the challenge.

“There has never been a boring day in my 14 years. Every day brings a new challenge, whether it is coming from engineering, production, or a shipment. You never know what each day will present,” says Daryl.

Starting as a nameplates manufacturer in 1954, GMN has evolved to do much more. Our success is due to being a company that serves a broad array of markets, and serves them well. Not only have we expanded our capabilities, we have expanded our global footprint as well. GMN opened the Singapore Division in 1997. The plant allowed us to provide more cost effective solutions to customers, while still maintaining quality and efficiency. Daryl has been one of the many working hands in this process, using his knowledge to better GMN on a daily basis and provide customers with the best solution. His devotion to the company and motivation to solve problems is what makes Daryl a GMN hero.

GMN Hero Julian Murillo

“We do our best.  Quality comes first.”

Making the customer happy and giving them quality product, is a common philosophy between each one of our employees at GM Nameplate.  For some, this concept is practiced in shipping product, writing tickets or even ensuring perfection in each project’s ink.  For Julian Murillo however, this company philosophy is performed in his role of leading the screen department at the San Jose, California division.  Helping plan each day for his department, looking for tickets, assigning jobs, and making sure the departments facility is in working order, are just a few of Julian’s everyday tasks.

“I’ve always viewed Julian as a leader in the screen department, regardless of his title.  He can do anything — if it goes through his department, he makes it happen.  He comes to work, every day, with the best attitude toward every person in the entire building, and it doesn’t just end when he walks out the door,” says San Jose Customer Service Manager, David Fabris.

Julian has been a part of the GMN family for over 23 years, and has carried the title of screen department lead for 15.  He is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand in his work with internal customers, directly with production control and inspection.  As Julian says, “…mucho orgullo (much pride) — I’m proud of what I do.”  Both customers and the entire company recognize the pride Julian has in every area of his work, his coworkers, and the company of GMN.

“I help with whatever they need.  Sometimes the sales people come to me and say, ‘Julian can you please help me with…’ and I never say no.  If they’re happy, I’m happy,” says Julian.

A recent challenge Julian overcame not only ended with a satisfied customer, but more importantly, a working device to save lives.  A medical company had a die-cut component from another supplier that continually failed.  They came to GMN needing a change, unsure of how or what could fix the problem.  Julian and a few others provided a suggestion to redesign the part by changing the way the material was built and cut.  The lifesaving medical device hasn’t failed since.

“I feel rewarded and am able to say, ‘Wow!  We can do anything because we have the right people.’  We are a team.  I feel special because of the relationship I have with my crew — we are very close. When we work together, everything comes easy,” says Julian.

The team of GMN is thankful for each one of our employee’s role within the company.  We are a team, and more importantly, a family.  Julian’s pride, work ethic and blissful attitude are what make him a GMN hero.

GMN Hero Marc Doan

Every GMN employee plays a significant role in the production process either directly or indirectly.  However, few employees wear as many hats or make as big of an impact as Marc Doan, the Seattle division plant manager.

Marc’s days are busy and involve many duties — balancing interactions with direct reports, customer service, and internal customers, along with making sure manufacturing stays on schedule and products ship on time.  He is always working on continual improvement, to better the staff, equipment, and facilities at GMN, but ultimately to better serve GMN’s customers.

“Our technical ability and our staff are what make us successful.  We aren’t afraid to take chances and do new things,” says Marc.

Marc started at GMN on July 18, 1988 as a stock cutter on Seattle’s plant floor.  After working in a variety of roles, he became plant manager 13 years ago.  Every day brings new tasks and challenges for Marc as he oversees a 140,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and staff of hundreds.  Multitasking, and problem-solving are critical to Marc’s success but his upbeat, can-do nature are what make him a successful leader with staff that both respect him and enjoy working with him.

An example of Marc’s can-do approach to production is evident from a recent rush order.   Marc received a phone call from a desperate sales representative that needed Marc’s help to get a customer an important part far ahead of schedule.  With a little creative problem solving, he was able to expedite production while still ensuring that the product met the stringent specification outlined by the customer. Marc always places customers first and the result was another happy customer.

“We are continuously evolving and reinventing ourselves to go where the customer is going.  We don’t stay stagnant, but adapt to our customers’ needs,” says Marc about the 60thanniversary of GMN.

The variety of products, the people, and the culture are a few of the many reasons why Marc enjoys his job.  Interacting with great people to see project through to completion is another is also gratifying for Marc.  We are honored to have him on the GMN team and call him a GMN hero.

GMN Hero David Fabris

“I love what I do.  I love the company I work for.  I love my job.”

Solving customer challenges is a capability in which many GM Nameplate employees take pride. For GMN’s David Fabris, it is also what makes his job fulfilling.

David started with GMN over 19 years ago as a screen printer operator when he was immediately recommended to apply for an opening in process engineering. Because of the encouragement to try for the position, he was able to quickly rise to his potential in the process engineering department.

Always excited to go to work with customers and teammates, David Fabris is now the manager of customer service and process engineering in GMN’s San Jose, CA division. He carries the responsibility of supporting the sales team, account managers, process engineers, operations, and the customer, along with providing technical assistance. He makes sure his team and customers are happy. “As a manager, I want to always be supportive and aware of my team,” David states, which is proven in his day-to-day leadership.

“We don’t do easy things at GMN we do great things,” says David.

GMN leadership has always looked to individuals to be the best they can be — committed to work and to people. Always evolving to deliver greater value to the customer, the culture of GMN is prospering with the help of employees like David. Not only does he manage his team, providing support and inspiration, he also encourages them to spend time reading articles about leadership and new things.  Learning about life, is something David finds truly important.

Every day, David looks forward to stepping foot in his office to take on new challenges and complex problems. He is dedicated to all GMN customers whether he is engaging with them directly, or supporting them through member of our team.

“Customer focus is solving their problem, supporting their needs, and allowing them to focus on what is important. If we do a good job, our customer doesn’t have to think about the solutions we provide to them—we do that for them,” says David.

GMN Hero David Woodard

What makes GMN the company that it is today? Many think it is the company’s unique dichotomy – hard work and innovation coupled with a family atmosphere. After 33 years with the company, GMN hero David Woodard is a beloved figure in the GMN family who exemplifies the dedication and service that the company has come to represent.

David graduated with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from San Jose State University and began working for a label company in Santa Clara, California. He held various roles within the company until they transitioned their leadership into the hands of GMN.  Ed Westfall, vice president of sales and marketing at the time, quickly contacted David and asked him to head the San Jose Art Department. David jumped into the opportunity and has proved an extraordinary addition to the leadership of GMN.

“I appreciate being able to work with such a great organization with great leaders and coworkers. Everyone here wants to take pride in their work, do a good job and do it efficiently. I am proud to be part of it,” says David Woodard, head of the GMN San Jose art department.

Working with GMN for over three decades, David has seen many major changes within the company. Starting with cut and paste mechanical drawings that were developed by hand, to everything done on a computer, he is proud of how the industry has grown. David makes sure everything in the art department runs smoothly by previewing tickets before they go to production and assuring that they are spot on for the customer.

“The customer knows GMN will meet their needs and give them good quality—they know they can depend on us,” says Woodard.

Although he may not work directly with external customers, David is an early link in the production chain. He ensures efficient work is provided to GMN customers, while executing with precision and quality. One element of this is making sure the color sequence looks just right and the dimensions are flawless.

Every day, David proves his dedication to the customer. He makes sure each project stays on schedule, guaranteeing quality and on-time delivery.  His duties include producing art files, attending daily production meetings, maintaining the department supply inventory, interacting with account managers, process engineers and department managers, and jumping in when needed. David illustrates his care and commitment to each customer and the company. We are thankful to have David as part of the GMN family and we are especially proud to call him a GMN hero.

GMN hero Todd Boedecker

Commitment and determination are both inspiring, indisputable words used to describe Todd Boedecker, GM Nameplate corporate project engineer.  Thanks to Todd, projects transition from development at GMN headquarters in Seattle, to production at GMN’s plant in China.  Not only is he the only one to carry his title – he is the seam between two divisions.

After graduating with a degree in physics, Todd began working with GMN and has been with the company for 23 years. In his role, Todd draws, reviews, designs, and tweaks whatever needs to be done for successful development. Todd provides communication and support between GMN customers and GMN’s China team. He gains satisfaction in seeing pieces fall into place, and the completion of a final product. Whether he is pushing the printing press pedal in the factory or designing projects for customers – Todd makes things happen. He has successfully built strong relationships with his coworkers at both facilities, on both continents.

With help from employees like Todd, GMN is able to expand capabilities – offering forward thinking and solutions to a variety of markets.  When asked about the future of GMN, Todd states, “I hope we see changes I can’t predict. Five years ago, I would not have ever predicted I’d be in China.”  New divisions, product lines, and goals are what give GMN a bright future.

“I, myself, have evolved since my start here. I have taken opportunities and challenges that have been given to me and used them to prepare myself for the future,” says Todd.

One recent project Todd executed was creating a circuit for a leader in gaming consoles.  GMN knew the product development would be successful with Todd onboard.  He was in charge of leading the local technical support for our customer’s development team and the project’s transfer to GMN’s China facility.  After developing a mix of prototypes and generating many different configurations to optimize the fit and performance of the circuit, Todd led the GMN team to a production-ready circuit. The circuit was cost effective and performed better in the application than most membrane circuits on the market.  With Todd’s help, GMN was able to get the circuit through production.

Although projects require the efforts of many, GMN would not be where it is today without employees like Todd. His detail-oriented and analytical mindset, along with his determination to take on any task is what makes him a GMN hero.
