Vias and two sided circuits

Two-sided circuit with vias

When you need to use a complicated printed silver membrane for a product, what can you do? That’s where vias and two sided circuits come in handy. Via in Latin means path, so vias are tiny holes, about eight thousandths of an inch large, forming a pathway. Vias allow electrical connections to flow between two sides of a substrate when ink is forced through the holes, creating a via connection. If you look at a two-sided circuit membrane, the holes will be located at the end of the routes.

Vias are used for two reasons. Sometimes a part has a small footprint and numerous routes and traces. In this case, both sides of the substrate are used to allow for more room. Vias let us to use both sides of the substrate, while maintaining the size of the current part.

Another reason for using vias is for design purposes. In the picture shown below, one side of the membrane has ink pads which will be used for administering medicine. The other side will be used to attach a circuit board. For this particular product, GMN used vias out of necessity so that the product would work properly.
